​Being overweight or obese can lead to many serious health problems in both children and adults. Many preventable diseases, including Type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, arthritis, heart attacks and strokes, are linked to obesity. In the U.S., two out of three adults, and one out of three children, now weigh more than what is considered healthy.

The Boston Public Health Commission’s healthy eating and active living initiatives focus on obesity prevention through policy, systems, and environmental changes that support healthier choices and address inequities in obesity rates for communities of color compared to Boston as a whole.  Reducing and eliminating these health inequities is a fundamental goal of our work.
We create education and awareness campaigns to promote healthy nutrition and physical activity.  We partner with local organizations to offer community walking groups.  And we work with childcare providers and parents to develop health practices and environments for our youngest residents.
